Fred Atkin

Before you came to Brookes what did you study and where?

I studied At Sedbergh School, doing Chemistry, geology and p.e. for my A-levels.

What made you choose Brookes as a place to study?

Brookes is a good University, with construction management being a renowned course. Also Oxford is located near to London, and being in the south is a fresh challenge for me.

What do you think of the course now that you're here?

The Course has been good since I've been studying. The only major criticisms I can give it, is that there is not enough practical work during term time. Also I believe there is too much emphasise on house building and not enough on different aspects of construction.

What do you think of the industrial placement aspect of your course?

Going on a placement, for construction management is a must. Firstly it's a good way too find out if the construction industry is appealing to you in later life. And finally the experience gained out of the placement, gives you a head start in the industry itself, as a lot of people don't have the opportunity.

What are your plans for when you've completed your course, for work or further study?

When I've completed my course, I think I shall spend time assessing my options. I would like to work abroad for a while perhaps, or help my father with his construction company.

What are the best bits of studying at Brookes?

The best bits for me personally are some of the guest lectures. Particularly in my first year with a man from King Sturge who I thought was excellent.

What advice do you have for others?

Try and be a confident and motivated individual, and you will gain the respect of your peers.
