A placement year working for Berkeley Homes as a graduate trainee has been one of the highlights of Annie Chan's Construction Management course. She is one of three Brookes undergraduates to gain scholarships from the company. Annie now knows she intends to pursue a career in the construction industry, although she hadn't been sure quite what she wanted to do when she left school in Plymouth.
She had enjoyed maths and physics and had been looking for a degree course that combined a hands-on subject such as engineering with management. "I came on an open day and really liked the whole atmosphere at Brookes. Construction Management appealed to me because it was not only theoretical, but a practical course as well. I was also attracted by the modular course system."
Annie says she has found modules covering law and construction economics especially interesting. While on placement she has been able to start planning her final year dissertation, which will examine how construction companies can maximise their economic performance.
"I have found the placement year invaluable. Berkeley Homes have really looked after me, and it has helped me gain a real understanding of industry. I spent the summer working as a quantity surveyor, which was followed by six months out on site. I have really enjoyed it, and I think it's important to get as much out of the placement as I can. After working on site, I have been based with their technical staff in their offices, where I've been lucky enough to get the chance to learn AutoCAD. All of the staff at Berkeley Homes have been really supportive."
