Construction Project Management

MSc/ PGDip/ PGCert

To meet the challenging demands of the modern learner and the rapidly evolving needs of the construction industry, the MSc in Construction Project Management (CPM) through its intelligent use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), is designed to deliver a flexible and innovative programme of study, for both full-time and open-learning students. Accredited by the RICS and the CIOB, the MSc CPM is aimed at the cognate student who holds an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject, for example Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture or Quantity Surveying.

This intense programme of subject-specific knowledge is delivered through an 'Applied Learning' approach. This approach enables students to develop a broad range of management skills and knowledge, and is achieved through guided working on real-life or reality based problems.

A further innovative aspect of the programme is the inclusion of four intensive study periods wherein full-time and open-learning students come together on campus to attend lectures, seminars and workshops and to share experiences. This, along with the European field trip, allows both cohorts to network and build lasting synergies which serve them throughout their careers.

Thus on completion of the MSc CPM, the student will be fully equipped to take the lead role of Construction Project Manager.

Project Management in the Built Environment

MSc/ PGDip/ PGCert

Accredited by the RICS and the CIOB, this programme is designed to meet the growing demand for project managers who can oversee the entire life cycle of any project. The programme uses an ‘Applied Learning’ approach that encourages learning by getting students to actively puzzle through problems that are adapted from complex real situations keeping much of the context intact. Real problems cross discipline boundaries and require research and collaboration. With expert tuition from academics and professional guidance from industry practitioners, the programme develops the skills, experience and knowledge that graduates need to become successful project managers in what is a dynamic and growing industry.

The majority of our current students are attracted by the practical nature of the MSc PMBE. One of them said: "… the course makes you think, it does not spoon feed you answers. It makes you consider the appropriateness of concepts to other areas and challenges you to build and implement solutions."

The programme is designed to bring full-time and open-learning students, who were already working in industry, together during intensive study periods and the European field-trip. These occasions provide plenty of opportunities for sharing experiences and making connections.

Real Estate

Accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) this programme will prepare you for the challenges of entering professional practice and completing the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) to become a Chartered Surveyor. The programme offers three distinct pathways: Commercial/Residential Real Estate, International Real Estate and Hotel & Hospitality. All students follow a set of core modules during the first semester and then select one of the pathways (Commercial/Residential, International or Hotel & Hospitality) and take the specialist modules associated with that pathway during the second semester and the Summer period.

We asked our students why they would recommend the MSc Real Estate programme - here's what they said:

  • The size of the MSc group (around 40 students each year) means that it is easier for the students to bond as a group with all the benefits this brings: excellent class discussions and support during what is a challenging MSc programme; great opportunities for socialising and more individual attention from staff.
  • The excellent and very enthusiastic teaching staff, guest lecturers and programme leader.
  • The employability of graduates (100% of 2012 graduates found relevant employment within 6 months of graduating) and the reputation of the programme within the profession.
